Do you want to visit a state with great beach resorts, an ethnically diverse population, and the tallest residential buildings in Brazil? Then come visit Santa Catarina!
Santa Catarina is a great place to visit and live. Out of all the Brazilian states, Santa Catarina has one of the highest life expectancy rates on average, low rates of corruption, and one of the lowest homicide rates in the country. The quality of life is considered very good here and the levels of education are high.
Joinville
Joinville is the largest city in Santa Catarina with about 1.5 million inhabitants in the metro area. Many of the people are German, Swiss, Norwegian and Italian descent. This city is important as it boasts the highest standards of living in Latin America. The city is home to many colleges and universities and has a strong economy based on commerce and industrial activities.
In July of each year, Joinville hosts the Joinville Dance Festival which is not only the most important dance festival in Brazil but by some records this is the biggest dance festival in the world. To enter the festival, the process is very competitive. Classical types of dance along side popular types of contemporary dance all have categories for hundreds of participates. You can see amazing videos of their performances online. The video below is of a ballet dance from last July.
Oktoberfest of Blumenau
Do you like to drink beer and hang out with your friends? No need to travel then to Germany for Oktoberfest, go to Blumenau in Santa Catarina! Santa Catarina boasts a strong German and Austrian influence and the Oktoberfest in Blumenau is considered the largest in the world outside of Germany. You can sip beers, go to cultural events, and even try out to be the Queen of the festival.
Founded in 1947, Criciúma EC is Santa Catarina's premier state league soccer team. Criciúma EC is Santa Catarina's most successful soccer team. The team won the 1991 Copa do Brasil, the 2002 Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, and the 2006 Campeonato Brasileiro Série C.
With its strong German and Italian influneces, Santa Catarina's food is a combination of European traditions mixed with local influences. "Rodizio de Massas" is an all you can eat option. The best pasta all you can eat options are in Santa Catarina. If you love pasta, this option is for you! Pay a fixed price and eat all the pasta you can. A popular desert in Santa Catarina is a delicious cake/bread type desert called cuca. The cake is flatter and can be made with different types of fruit, such as pineapple or banana.
Santa Catarina also boasts Brazil's tallest residential building. The building is called Inifinity Coast and is located on the beach. The construction is scheduled to be completed in 2019. When finished, the building will have 66 floors and be over 240 meters tall!
É surpreendente que Santa Catalina tenha muita influência alemã e italiana. The dessert called Cuca, reminds me of the Mexican dessert, capirotada. If I have to choose between the two statues I would rather visit the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.
olà You got me at pasta. I love pasta and anything that has to do with food. =) I now think of Santa Catalina as a mini Italy and a mini Germany. Its amazing that you can visit Santa Catalina in Brazil and be able to say that you experienced European traditions as well. Thank you for mentioning Rodizio De Massas restaurant, its going in my restaurant bucket list. Great post !
Santa Catarina sounds like a great city and Oktoberfest would be a great event and opportunity to learn from the German culture. It really sounds like October is the month to visit this city. This festival would allowed me to experience German folk dance/ singing , German Folk costume and German food. What a great opportunity to experience different traditions and cultures.
What aspects of Santa Catarina do you find most interesting? Which iconic Cristo statue would you rather visit in Brazil?
I was very surprised to read that Santa Catarina has one of the highest life expectancy rates. Sounds like a safe but fun city. I would love to visit and walk around some of the universities and learn a little bit from the Santa Catarina student culture.
I would rather visit the Christ Redeemer. Its such an iconic landmark and the views from the top look amazing.
Oi Anali, I was surprised as well when I read about their life expectancy rate and that the crime is very low as well as their homicide rates. one that that interested me is that their education levels are high.
Bom dia! I enjoyed reading all the information you provided for Santa Catarina. I'm not very religious but if I were to choose one to visit, I think I would choose to visit the Cristo Luz statue as the colors of the statue change which keeps the statue active and more attracting of peoples attention. The other aspects of Santa Catarina that I find most interesting is the state league soccer game. I played soccer for 2 years, I had to stop due to my asthma, but i enjoyed playing it and I enjoy how intense the games get and the different ways people find a way to score a goal. And of course, I am interested in that all you can eat pasta because YUM.
I think the international influences in Santa Catarina are the most interesting. If I had to choose between the two statues it would be the Christ in Rio, solely for the history and the fact it is so iconic.
My wife and I are going to Munich for oktoberfest this fall, if only I had heard about this sooner... This place looks awesome! This blog is making me add way to many places to my google maps that I want to visit.
The most interesting aspect I found of Santa Catarina is that it has German and Italian influences! I had no idea that there was such a strong German/Italian impact on the food and culture of the area. I think I would like to visit the Christ in Rio if I had to choose. It is an international landmark and it is full of historical significance!
I am so glad that you brought up all you can eat pasta. Food is my favorite part of experiencing a new culture, and experiencing pasta in Santa Catarina would be an interesting experience. The cuna looks delicious! Trying new desserts is the best part of new food!
Santa Catarina almost seems like a little Europe you can enjoy on one Brazil's many stunning beaches. Certainly, sounds like a fine place to visit and perhaps a fine place to live one day.
To answer your questions, I think the enormous dance festival seems like the most fascinating that I would be interested in attending, although the food (pasta!) also sounds lovely. To be entirely honest, I still think the Christ the Redeemer statue is more impressive and is definitely the one I would rather visit of the two statues.
Santa Catarina is a beautiful place. I’m really enjoying learning about different parts of Brazil. I love the pictures from the presentation. It looks amazing. I love that Santa Catarina has a low rate of corruption. This is a great news, especially with the problems with corruption in South America. It is great to know that some parts of Brazil have a low rate of corruption. Also, I love that many cities have a Jesus statue. I love Santa Catarina.
I enjoyed reading this and it seems that many places in Brazil are known for their beautiful beaches. It was most interesting to me that Santa Catarina is very diverse and has German and Italian influences. I am interested in trying the foods that have European and local influences. If I were to visit a Cristo statue, I would visit the one in Rio because I am more familiar with its history.
Boa Noite! Eu goste muito do seu trabalho. I have learned more about Santa Catarina from your work than from hours surfing the web! I knew that that area, south of Brasil had a strong influence from Germans and other Europeans, non Portuguese Speakers. Friends that have been there said sometimes it seems they are in Germany, but speaking Portuguese!

Florianópolis (the island) is a great party city in Santa Catarina!
