Mato Grosso (norte)

Região Centro-Oeste: Mato Grosso (Norte)

by Jessica D. Hernandez

Mato Grosso, Brazil

History
Cuiaba, Mato Grosso

After being forced to retreat by the Portuguese colonists in 1708, Mato Grosso was first settled by pioneer gold seekers from São Paulo. Cuiaba, the capitol of Mato Grosso, was founded in 1719. It lies along the Cuiaba River, a river which flows into the Paraguay River. Agriculture and stock raising are now the main economic activities in the surrounding area. Most of Mato Grosso lies on the western extension of the Brazilian Plateau, across which runs the watershed that separates the Amazon River basin to the north from the basin of the Río de la Plata system to the south.

Mato Grosso is filled with landscapes of nature, parks, forests, and wildlife. It is the home of three main ecosystems The Cerrado, the Pantanal, and, also known as the lungs of the earth, the Amazon rainforest. The state’s lowlands are hot and humid, and its highlands are hot and dry. The average temperature is 79 °F. Average annual rainfall is 50 to 60 inches. There is a distinct dry season from May to September.

Food in...

Sorriso, Mato Grosso
While researching, I stumbled upon a specific (and popular) pizzeria in Sorriso called Pizzaria D’Macena. It is Brazilian food with Italian influence on pizza! While browsing their menu, I found some curious and unique styles of pizza which included toppings of kiwi, strawberries, and fruity flavors but paired with three other pie style options. Check it out!

12 pedaços, pode escolher até 4 sabores.

Chapada dos Guimarães National Park

Full of rugged terrain and waterfalls, Chapada dos Guimarães is 80,600 acres of the geographical center of South America. Learning about this national park highlights a major commitment of what Mato Grosso represents which is a purpose to protect significant sections of the local ecosystems and to ensure the preservation of natural and archaeological sites, while supporting appropriate use for visiting, education and research. This national park is home to the jaguar, pampas deer, howler monkey, giant anteater, red and blue macaws, armadillo, and so many more. Take a tour below!

As we saw, Mato Grosso is stunningly beautiful and mesmerizing. There are a lot of current events centered around climate change and the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, in terms of deforestation and much more. I know some of you may have Netflix and others of you use your friend’s/parent’s/roommate’s/others account; well if you haven’t already check out the show Patriot Act on Netflix with Hasan Minhaj. I encourage you to tune in the next time you’re on Netflix. The first episode of the latest season (Season 3, Episode 1) looks at various topics in Brazil and current, very real, issues surrounding the Amazon rainforest and information about how indispensable, essential, and crucial this region of Brazil is to the entire world.

Obrigada! Muito bem this term!

  3. Ola Jessica
Thank you for the brief but interesting history of Mato Grosso. It’s so cool that that it has three ecosystems; the flora and the fauna must be amazing in this place. I enjoyed the video and learning that the animals are free and can maintain their independence.

The pizza looks delicious, a little bit of everything – sweet and salty flavors. However, the Porção cought my attention because in Mexico this is a classic, we called them “chicharron de Puerco/cerdo” or” pork rinds “We like to eat it with hot sauce. The views of Chapada dos Guimarães National Park are amazing. Thank you for the video! It’s nice that this park supports education and research. Such a great place to learn from.
Thank you for letting us know about the Patriot Act on Netflix.

Thank you for a great post!

I would like to go hiking in the Amazon Rainforest or Chapada dos Guimarães. The pizza looked very interesting. I like pizza with pineapple so I'm sure I would like the pizza with kiwi and strawberries. The Porção also looked delicious and made me want chicharrones. I really liked the photo you posted of Chapada dos Guimarães!

  5. Wow, I love the idea of having a park where the animals are free. This is a wonderful idea. Obviously, if they don’t have a tiger, right? I have a friend that lives in Brazil and she told me that it is normal to see monkeys in the street. Sounds like a wonderful place to visit. I like the solidarity with which people in Brazil treat the animals. The food looks delicious. It is a good example to follow. Thank you for your post. Have a great day.

    1. Ola Lucia, I would love to be walking down the street and see a monkey I love animals and being around them like that in an everyday life would be amazing and something new that you dont see in the city. Mato Grosso seems like a very tropical and sacred place, you appreciate nature more when its a big part of life like here.

    2. Oi Lucia,
I don't know where your fried is from in Brazil but it is not normal to see monkeys in the street, unless you live in a more rural or forest area like the north and central. I just don't want you all to have that idea... that you are walking by a beach in Rio with monkeys around you! On the other hand, my mom has a farm about an hour from Belo Horizonte (the capital of Minas Gerais) and we do see little monkeys on the trees!

  6. Boa tarde,

Thank you for an informative post! I love that this region is focused on saving the Earth's ecosystem. It would be nice to take some kind of tour through the rainforest to explore the different species and wildlife that habitat this area. Thank you for mentioning Hasan Minaj's Patriot Act! I love his stand up, and it will be interesting to watch this episode about Brazil.

The food looks delicious! I love the pizza-- it looks so interesting! I would be curious to try this pizza with a variety of different toppings. I've never heard of kiwi on pizza!

  7. Ola! this place looks very tropical and relaxing! Even the food looks very tropical and I like that even the things to do for fun are activities to do outdoors! The food also looks great, I'm not a pineapple on pizza girl but I would give that kiwi on pizza a try!

  8. Boa tarde,
What a beautiful area. Brazil is so diverse, it blows my mind! I feel like everyone has mentioned that pizza, but it really is crazy looking! Im actually not a super huge fan of pizza, but that is one I think I would have to try. That National park is absolutely breathtaking. I am definitely an outdoor person, so I love hiking and seeing all the wonders of nature. I would definitely be going there. Thanks for your post!

  9. The Chapada dos Guimarães National Park looks like the Grand Canyon. The famous Veu de Noiva is a waterfall worth to visit.
The Pantanal is an area for which I would like to know more. A huge flooded area in the Mato Grosso, an area of the size of half a million acres fill of wild life and nature! In some ways, this is an like like south Texas and the Louisiana river areas. Lots of rain, alligators, very wild! Along with the Amazonian Rainforest, the Pantanal is another one with a high biodiversity.

  10. Olá

This city looks like a very calm and beautiful place to visit. The Chapada dos Guimarães National Park definitely reminds me of the Grand Canyon like Marite stated but, it is obviously more green and tropical, which I think I would prefer. Being from Chicago, pizza has always been an important part of my life so the pizza pictured above definitely stood out and looks delicious with all the different flavors. Mato Grosso would be a very naturalistic place I would love to visit!

  11. Oi companheiros,
Mato Grosso seems like a huge sanctuart. I would like to visit its museu de Historia Natural and the Parque Florestal de Sinop. All of these nature makes me think that we can still save part of our world and fight global warming. Along this course I saw a great italian influence in the Brazilian culture, such is the case of the famous pizzeria.

  12. Hey Jessica, I liked how you focused some on the health of the Amazon. And then the food from the mixed italian and brazilian food looks fantastic. I enjoyed all the linked content as well.

  13. Hey Jessica,
Thanks for putting up the maps of the amazon and what the forest actually looks like nationally. I understand that Brazil is a major exporter of lumber. Mato Grosso definately seems like one of the places I would like to visit because of its nice nature parks. Hopefully local governments figure out a way to successfully sustain logging and tourism in a benefical balence.

  14. Olá!

Mato Grosso seems like an absolutely stunning place to visit, especially Chapada dos Guimarães National Park with its diverse wildlife and beautiful waterfalls. I also appreciate the emphasis on preservation and the conservation efforts underway to protect the natural landscapes and animals of this region. I have yet to see Patriot Act, but I'm a fan of Hassan Minhaj, so I'll be sure to check it out!

Side note: that pizza place also seems to offer some interesting culinary creations that I would be interested in trying!
